A Woman Displays Signs Of Depression And Alcoholism And Schedules An Appointment To See Her Physician
Cindy was a forty-seven-year-old pharmacy technician who knew that she had a problem with her drinking. As an illustration, within the past seven months she has experienced the need to have a drink or two before going to work, a week ago she failed to pass a random saliva alcohol test where she is employed, four months ago she got stopped by the police for a DUI, and last but not least, for the past two months she has started to fail to remember what she does and says when she goes out drinking with her pals.
Similar to many other people, Cindy's involvement with alcohol began slowly and continued at this level of involvement for quite a long period of time because sometimes she engaged in occasional social drinking. In actual fact, for nearly nine months, every time she drank, she made sure to drink in moderation. Something about her pattern of drinking, nonetheless, seemed to drastically change when she got divorced from her husband.
Cindy got very disheartened about the loss of her husband, and as a way to refrain from dwelling on her negative emotions she came to a decision that she would begin associating more often with some of her pals who love to have fun and drink. It didn't take too long, however, before her drinking increased considerably the more habitually she went to and drank at sporting events, happy hours, private parties, dinner dates, and family get-togethers with her friends.
In a word, she was drinking and having a great time just like everybody else in her group of buddies without giving much thought to the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been exhibiting. Yet somewhere in the recesses of her brain she realized the facts about the negative alcohol effects on the body and on the brain and that she probably required alcohol counseling but avoided the thought as much as possible.
One afternoon during her twelve month physical examination, her doctor asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to lie to her physician, Cindy owned up to the truth that she routinely drinks more than she should. In fact, she stated that she routinely drinks in a hazardous and irresponsible manner. Then Cindy informed her doctor about her melancholy. More specifically, she articulated that wrecked relationships many times triggered a disheartening chain of events typified by increased drinking which further resulted in more depressing feelings that, in turn, led to more drinking. And this is explicitly what took place when she and her husband got divorced two years ago.
Cindy's healthcare practitioner then said the following: "I am not trying to make an unprofessional judgment, but with your medical situation we may be facing two separate problems. As a consequence, I think we ought to make an appointment for you to get an alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse appraisal from my partner, Dr. Bakos, who is a drug and alcohol abuse specialist."
"Whether your drinking circumstance is more associated with alcohol dependency or alcohol abuse is not clear at this time, but I think that further exploration is needed. Then I feel we probably should make an appointment for you to get a psychological examination from another one of my partners, Dr. Devor, who is a counseling psychologist."
"I need to get a better handle on your depression and see how much your depression and drinking are intertwined." Cindy displayed her satisfaction with her physician's strategy and thanked him for his time and assistance.
