A Young Man Needs Treatment For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Chemical Dependency

Approximately four months ago I had breakfast with a thirty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from extreme depression, has relationship problems, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As declared by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his continual relationship issues.

As explained by Benjamin, he is so crushed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical problems that he basically has no energy to achieve much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish five semesters of grad school in Italian language and culture.

Benjamin's circumstance makes me wonder if he is an illustration of a person who can look in the mirror and perceive his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something constructive about these problems. Or, on the other hand, if he a person who has to hit the very bottom before he gets drug and alcohol dependency rehab that results in lasting recovery.

It may be asked how therapy would help his chemical dependency. First of all, there are several newly produced doctor-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through the drug and alcohol detoxification process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in therapy he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is absolutely nothing healthy about drug abuse and hazardous and careless drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the road to legal problems, deteriorating health, a premature death, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, and financial difficulties. Fourth, therapy for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him deal with these psychological issues more effectively and possibly create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Due to the fact that Benjamin lacks the determination to achieve much of anything in his life, it is evident that he definitely needs a little hope for a more fulfilling lifestyle. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the therapy he requires for his intense depression and drug addiction and alcoholism and remain in his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is simply too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to stay away from drugs and alcohol via alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the counseling he requires for his intense depression, he can turn his life around and start living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

More positive relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and beneficial change are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to obtain the professional rehab he needs, follow through with his treatment protocol, live his life in a drug and alcohol-free and healthy manner, and learn how to foster a more positive attitude about his life.
