An Unpredictable High School Student Manifests A Number Of Alcohol-Related Issues, Gets Removed From School, And Has To See The School Counselor
Stephen was a fifteen year old high school sophomore who was exhibiting more than a few alcohol-related problems at school. Therefore, the principal informed him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be permitted to return to school.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school discharge to his parents. His parents were "relatively old-style" and told Stephen that getting expelled from school was not a satisfactory educational game plan. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would probably be like a lead weight around his legs that could quite possibly harm his educational attainment for the remainder of his life. Not only this, but Stephen's parents were extremely unhappy that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his friends in the second.
It was obvious that his Mother and Father were in total agreement with Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he had better make up his mind to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his chat with his Mother and Father, Stephen in due course agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen called the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next afternoon.
When Stephen went to see Miss Pender, she instantly reviewed all of the alcohol-related difficulties Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related actions were such a cause for concern.
Quite frankly, Stephen was not sure why the principal suggested that he see a school therapist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking situation? In view of the fact that virtually all of his friends drink as much if not more than he does, primarily, drinking is no big thing. Stated another way, if nearly everyone is drinking, why is this such a big deal?
In a word, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to thwart his ability to function as a responsible young man. As put into words by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your friends drink beer, wine coolers, wine, or hard liquor does not mean that it's right for you."
Luckily, Miss Pender was very well prepared for her discussion with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had underlined that summarized various drinking facts and statistics that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of data that applied principally to teens.
After Miss Pender went over the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was plain to see that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a real eye opener for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to explain the long term and the short term results of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, but she also took the time to validate what she was saying with alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that related to everyone, and mainly to underage drinkers.
Undeniably, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantaneously comprehended why he should not be engaging in abusive and excessive drinking with or without his pals any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she discussed and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
