Hazardous And Irresponsible Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Wife, And Motivation For Beneficial Change

It took several years but Sarah finally decided that she had enough with her husband's abusive and unhealthy drinking. She was tired of seeing Keith come home after 2:00 AM from drinking instead of spending much needed time with her and the children. She was also tired of the DUI Keith recently got. Furthermore she was worn-out from making excuses for her spouse when he couldn't make it to work on time due to his excessive and abusive drinking.

In a similar manner, she was anxious about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Keith's careless drinking. And lastly she was tired of the dangerous financial predicament into which he had placed his family due to his careless drinking behavior.

One morning when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's careless drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something to cut into the harmful cycle of Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. So Sarah looked on the web under "alcohol treatment" and discovered numerous rehabilitation clinics that were all located less than ten miles away from where she and Keith resided.

When Sarah called each rehab center she introduced herself and stated that her husband was manifesting careless drinking behavior. She also articulated that her husband had a top quality health insurance program at his place of employment and that outpatient or inpatient alcohol abuse treatment would be covered if a physician in the company health network prescribed the rehab.

After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's careless and hazardous drinking, the psychologist in a caring but firm way explained to Sarah how she more likely than not contributed to her spouse's careless drinking through the months and the years. How? Mainly by rationalizing his drinking rather than letting him suffer the results of his careless drinking behavior.

Stated more forcefully, the therapist stated to Sarah that she may have been accidentally enabling Keith's careless and excessive drinking behavior. The counselor also underscored the fact that Sarah would not be able to control her husband's behavior. With the guidance and support of the rehabilitation team at the treatment center, on the other hand, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's careless drinking but she would also be able to learn how to encourage him to schedule an appointment at the treatment facility so that he could talk about his careless and excessive drinking behavior with a counselor.

The good news was that after Sarah explained this to Keith and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been quite worried about his careless and hazardous drinking behavior and that he was quite thankful to learn that Sarah wanted to do something positive about his careless drinking behavior. Consequently, he made an appointment to see a doctor at the local alcohol treatment center.

While simply calling a rehab clinic does not ensure that a person's careless drinking behavior will become a non-issue or that a person will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is undeniably an essential feature in the treatment process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting quality help for his drinking problems, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was considerably increased.
