Running will wear down your knees, as will many other of the popular aerobic activities, but swimming doesn't compress the joints, so there is no compromise to the health gains that it holds. I love this aerobic activity, but it might not be the perfect one for you. The best advice I have is to join a gym for a month. A lot of gyms even offer a free meeting with a fitness trainer. If that's the case make sure and inform your fitness trainer that you want to try a number of exercises so that you can find a cardiovascular activity that you like so you will stick to it. This will let you try out a lot of different aerobic exercises and find out which ones you prefer.
