Stress Reduction With Music And Sound For Spa At Home Treatments
Everyone can benefit from stress reduction treatments, that can be exercised anywhere at anytime. How we handle stress is an indication of how happy and healthy we are. We have been studying the effects of music on healing, relaxation and relieving stress. It's been an exciting and rewarding journey of discovery, and to celebrate National Stress Awareness Month, I am glad to share some of our findings here with you.
Music calms the savage beast in all of us to help stress reduction and relaxation. By itself, Music can help center and relax us. We may use high-energy rhythmic music with a beat (such as Spa Rhythms) to get us moving and dancing. Shaking the body and releasing pent up energy can be a highly effective stress release. Then there is the slow paced, soothing music which calms us down (such as Spa Dreams), and helps entrain our body to a more peaceful, harmonic state. Of the numerous tools that help us overcome stress, music complements all of them. Mind-body modalities like yoga, meditation, toning, mantra, chanting, guided imagery, and visualization are all heightened by the presence of relevant music. These are all important elements of an effective wellness solutions program.
Try developing your own music for highest benefit from your own efforts, while realizing that nothing ventured is nothing gained. Music can be enjoyed and effective in either live or recorded forms and it is especially beneficial when self-created. By that, I suggest you are making the music yourself, either with instruments or with your voice. Now, many of you can say '"Oh, I can't sing, I don't play an instrument." But everyone has a voice and everyone can tap two sticks together and make a rhythm. Singing in the shower or in the car can in fact release endorphins in your brain that heighten your spirit and make you happy. Singing can in fact change your emotional state.
Recall the song "Whenever I feel afraid, I whistle a happy tune and no one ever knows I'm afraid." Try singing when driving down the road alone in your car. Take a walk in nature. Sing a song that lifts your mind. Create a song expressing how you feel. It will not matter what it sounds like. Let it out. Make long tones of ah or oh and push the sound out with your breath. This is a method called toning and it is highly relaxing and beneficial for our whole bodies.
This may seem like summer camp, but when I am truly stressed, sometimes putting on nice music and dancing around the floor can release the energies of strains that may have been eating away at me. Anything that gets you breathing is going to help alleviate your stress. Deliberate breathing exercises are one thing, but dancing and rolling and huffing and puffing may be more fun and can do the same thing. Try and create a lifestyle allowing relaxation with home spa products.
Laughter along with music has been shown to be the best anti-stress therapy and come at any time. Here's something we learned when we were researching for our presentations on music and healing at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. One retired Air Force Colonel was working for the Pentagon doing seminars with military families who were experiencing the stress of multiple deployments or losses in war. He taught them to laugh. He made them laugh when they didn't even feel like laughing. The physical effect of laughing was able to stimulate them to really start feeling good again. Laughter was an essential tool to lift their spirits.
